Simple vintage dresses

Dress and bracelet: Vintage, Hat: J.Crew, Shoes: Zara, Bag: c/o DVF

I'm starting to get tired of summer outfits now and I'm coveting Fall layers, wishing for the weather to cool so I can begin to be more adventurous with outfits. For the past month I've settled into a uniform of simple vintage dresses (after stocking up in my favorite Williamsburg vintage store) with a panama hat and flats. These are all easy and light to wear in this NYC heat that I still haven't adjusted to after a lifetime of rainy British summers.
What are you coveting for Fall? I've got my eye on these boots!

A rendez-vous to remember

On Tuesday evening, myself and 11 other NYC bloggers were invited to a 'night of rendezvous' by DVF. The whole event was cleverly surrounded by suspense from the puzzle piece invitations through to meeting at unknown venues. After a blowout at Wonderland we were taken to the DVF offices to view a selection of the beautiful clothes and accessories from the latest collection (how awesome are those clutches and the hot pink dress?) along with their incredible views over Chelsea at sunset. Later we all sat for a surprise personal 'rendezvous' with Diane in her impeccable office, where she chatted with us about fashion,  life, careers, and of course her love of Twitter
The most important quotes that I took home from the evening were: "Be the woman you want to be" and "The most important rendezvous is the one we have with ourselves". Truly inspirational!
Certainly a rendezvous I'll never ever forget.

Thanks so much to DVF, and to Danny and BFAnyc for the photos!

DVF are also running an instagram competition for the chance to win $1000 to spend in their store! Share a moment of rendezvous with the tag #dvfnightisyoung- can't wait to see all the entries!

The pleated lace skirt

Top and skirt: Reiss, Bag: Kate Spade, Hat: J.Crew

I've said before that my love for pleats has no bounds and here I am, at it again! Truly hoping that I will be able to wear this skirt into Fall, it feels like the new season is rapidly upon us! Perhaps with a chunky cream sweater?

Floral dresses and macarons

Dress: c/o Dahlia, Bag: Kate Spade (similar here), Hat: JCrew, Sandals: Urban Outfitters

This dress is so ideal for those lazy summer days. I wore this 2 weekends ago when I had the whole weekend to myself. I spent the day wandering the shops on Madison Avenue, headed to Laduree for a macaron stop (my favourites- chocolate, vanilla and caramel)  and finished the afternoon in Central Park reading a book by the lake. It was such a perfect sunny Saturday!

Thanks to Hideyuki Tatebayashi for stopping me and taking these photos!

Nylon Korea

Such an honor to be featured in this months edition of Nylon magazine in Korea! The feature focusses on sunglasses (weren't we just talking about sunglasses?) but my wrists got a feature too! I'm wearing my oranges and lemons print top (Zara) and Topshop round gold sunglasses (seen in an old post here). In the pic below my face you can see some of my favourite accessories, including the YSL Arty and Tory Burch cuff, and my lemon yellow skirt by Uniqlo. Yes, I was very lemony that day! Thanks so much Koo for sending me the feature and for taking the shots! You can see the full spreads and lots of cool NY streetshots below...

Fuschia pleats

Dress and belt: Vintage, Sandals: Urban Outfitters, Hat: Reiss, Bag: Kate Spade

So last weekend when we went to Williamsburg I mentioned that I'd stumbled across some great vintage stores. One of which had only just opened the previous day and their collection was fantastic, I literally had to be dragged away! This is just one of the dresses I bought, as you can see my love of pleats knows no bounds. This is such a perfect summer dress to me, easy to wear for most occasions, on this day I was actually just going to the movie theatre to see the latest Batman (good movie, made all the better by seeing our apartment in the background of several scenes- I was a little overexcited, guess I'm still getting used to living in NY, or any big city, where this happens all the time!)

Burberry for Spring/Summer

Late last year some of you may remember I started up a second blog, to marry my love of fashion, with what I do in my day job- science. Since moving to NY, I haven't had the opportunity to keep both blogs going, but I've realised that I've missed it- and would love to find a way to stream that content into mochasoywhippy...

And so, here's some background.... I started my personal style blog when I was towards the end of my PhD and while I was writing my thesis, clothes were the best escape. People in fashion were often pretty confused when I confessed to being a scientist. It got me to thinking...  Do people often stereotype scientists or other postgraduates as sartorially challenged “geeks” with no style and no interest in the matter? Because in all honesty, part of me once agreed with this too, but it's far from the truth. In these posts I’m hoping to document the fashion industry from a different perspective, with a more 'scientific' approach!

I'm not going to talk about science itself. The ‘models’ I refer to will be purely of the skinny, beautiful kind, not computational or otherwise. I might show some graphs though, just for fun.

Here's the first installment, where I documented the SS12 Burberry show...

Figure 1: The Colour Scheme. Muted mustard and berry tones with hints of bright blue and orange.

Figure 2: Prints vs. block colour. Stripes were the most popular print, but half of the looks featured block coloured jackets, dresses or skirts.
Figure 3: The different styles. 100% of all the looks featured a knee-mid length! Yay

This season has to be one of my personal favourites from Burberry (no surprise there, I've said that the past 3 seasons). But who doesn't love a peaked bobble hat?! Knee/midi skirts are a personal fave of mine, perfect all year round, and wearable for all situations (and ages, yeah I know I'm not the only one wary of flashing too much thigh)! Feminine silhouettes, structured trenches (belted at the waist- of course) and a mixture of subtle and bold prints. Bailey even accommodated for a British summer and gave us coats, jackets and knits...Very thoughtful- and practical! Although I by no means have the budget for Burberry, these silhouettes are definitely something I'm aiming for this summer!

Summer Pastels

Hat: J.Crew, Skirt: American Apparel, Bag: Kate Spade, Top: Reiss, Sandals: Tory Burch (similar here)

This weekend we took a trip to Brooklyn to check out the Smorgasburg food market and wander around the area. Can you believe after 7 months living in NYC we had never been to Williamsburg? Needless to say, the market was fantastic, the views of Manhattan were incredible and I was in vintage store heaven! I have some wonderful vintage finds to show you!
I chose this outfit, mostly because it was such a ridiculously hot day and I wanted something light and very comfortable to wear. I got this silk vest from the Reiss sale when I was back in the UK and remembered that I had this peachy skirt from years ago (remember this post? It seems like a lifetime ago)!
